Another thing - I seem to recall the ticket price for a junior was about 3/ 6d. For younger readers, that's the equivalent of 17.5p.

Fuck me, I was right there with you and had the same experience (you're not Gary Smith, are you?). My recollection is that it was a bit longer than 30 secs and one of the gates had got damaged in the crush so they opened it to have a look at it and we all rushed in, not sure how many but couldn't have been more than a couple of dozen. That was my first game at UP. With only being a youngster and getting in so late I was stuck at the back and couldn't see much but the atmosphere was fantastic - the place was rocking.
Funnily enough, I now live near Hereford.

Funny what you remember. The headline in the game's write-up next day (prob in the mirror) was "West Ham burst Hereford's bubble". I recall
that headline like it was yesterday but can't remember what I had for breakfast today.

Just read about this funnily enough in a book called 32 programmes, which is a decent read. I never knew it was us that knocked them out either.

Two years later they knocked us out.
Luckily, the had joined the League in the meantime, otherwise we would have been knocked out by a non-League side for the first time since we stopped being non-League ourselves.*
*May not be true, but I think it is. Open to correction

I was a naive apprentice at the time. Asked the foreman if I could leave work early to go to the match. Decent bloke, he said "you mean your aunty's funeral!".
Crossed London, got to the ground before two o clock only to find all the gates shut.
So poor old aunty never got buried!!!!!

I was about ten people from the North Bank turnstiles when they closed.Loads of people immediately turned round to run to the South Bank and about 30 seconds later they open the turnstiles again at let a few more in, of which I was one. People ended up watching the game on top of the flats. One of my ten most memorable games in 48 years of going to Upton Park.
